Guide to Livestreaming Mass from your Phone Guide to Livestreaming Mass from your Phone
As we continue our journey of spiritual connection and fulfillment during a time of quarantine, isolation and social distancing, one of the most effective means of engaging the faithful is through livestream Mass. Here are some practicable and manageable tips to producing a high-quality and spiritually effective livestream Mass, using just your cell phone, a tripod, and a lapel mic.

IDENTIFY YOUR PLATFORM AND INTERNET CONNECTION BEFORE YOU START.
Deciding whether you’ll be streaming on Facebook Live, YouTube, or Instagram will affect how you should position your phone. To avoid pixelation or low-quality video, establish and test your internet and streaming connection before beginning Mass. If you have a Facebook or Google account, you already have access to streaming capabilities on Facebook Live and YouTube respectively.

ENSURE YOU HAVE A WELL-LIT, STABLE AND QUIET ENVIRONMENT.
Using a tripod will minimize any possibility for shaky video quality or extra movement. Having a lighting source set up behind your tripod will ensure consistent light that doesn’t become warped. When possible, avoid mixing natural, outdoor light with indoor light sources. Additionally, confirm prior to streaming that your lapel microphone is positioned in a way to secure adequate and clear audio.

OPTIMIZE YOUR PHONE POSITION AND LOCATION.
As mentioned above, a tripod will help you secure the most stable video possible. Ensure that your tripod, or whatever surface on which you position your phone, is level. For Facebook Live and YouTube, your phone should be placed horizontally, whereas for Instagram, you’ll want it to be vertical. Position your phone in such a spot and at such an angle that it can capture both the ambo and the altar in the frame. Your phone’s camera has settings in which you can adjust the width and scope of your frame; explore these until you find an optimal setting.

ENCOURAGE PARISHIONERS TO ENGAGE.
Be sure to start your livestream a few minutes early to allow parishioners and other viewers to join in. Prior to beginning the celebration, provide an opportunity for those watching to offer up any intentions. A great way to encourage parishioners to actively engage in the Mass is by directing them toward the chat function. Use this as a way for viewers to greet each other during the Sign of Peace and to share a bit of virtual fellowship at the conclusion of the Mass. These best practices will enhance your ability to connect your parishioners, both practically and spiritually, with your livestream Mass.
